National and State Housing Agencies

  • Federal Housing Administration (FHA) provides mortgages insurance on loans made by FHA-approved lenders on single family, multifamily, manufactured homes and Reverse Mortgages for Seniors.
  • Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides mortgage guarantees on loans made by VA-approved lenders on single family and manufactured homes for qualified veterans and active duty military.
  • Rural Housing Service (RHS) provides financial assistance through guaranteed loans, direct loans and some grant funds to individuals, public bodies, non-profits, Native American tribes and cooperatives in rural areas.
  • Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) the state's mortgage finance agency, created in 1972 by the Virginia General Assembly to help low-and moderate-income Virginians attain quality affordable housing.
  • Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) partners with Virginia's communities to develop their economic potential, it invests funding each year into housing and community development projects throughout the state-the majority of which is designed to help low-to-moderate income citizens.
  • Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBA) is a financial services organization that works with financial institutions to provide low-cost financing and community building programs throughout the Southeast. Services at FHLBA are available through one of its 1200 member financial institutions.
  • NeighborWorks America is a national network of more than 240 community-based organizations in 50 states creating healthy communities through the work of thousands of partners to provide financial support, technical assistance and training for community-based revitalization efforts.
  • Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses through volunteer labor, donations of money and materials with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.
  • Housing Virginia is a non-profit organization that represents a diverse collaboration of housing organizations in Virginia; they work together to create a more favorable environment for affordable communities that provide a wide range of housing opportunities for all people.
